Interest paid is not the same as interest accrued
Interest paid is the portion of actual payments applied to interest during the selected year. Interest accrued is the interest calculated for calendar-year days on the outstanding balance, even when payments were not received. Those figures may differ.
Example of a year-end loan summary
On a $10,000 loan at 8%, interest accumulates daily. A payment of $500 is split between interest and principal according to the amount of unpaid accrued interest on its payment date. Enter all payments since the loan began so the beginning-of-year balance and unpaid interest are correctly carried into the selected year.
Not IRS Form 1098
This worksheet is not a substitute for Form 1098 or other required lender tax reporting. Tax deductions, lender reporting thresholds, and loan-specific tax treatment require separate verification.
