How the calculation works

Simple Interest Calculator explained

Simple interest is calculated only on the original principal. Prior interest does not become part of the balance used for future interest.

For a daily calculation, convert the annual rate to a daily rate using the contract’s day-count basis, then multiply by the principal and number of days.

This method is common for short-term notes, per-diem payoff interest, and educational examples, but an actual contract may specify different timing and rounding rules.

Frequently asked questions

Does simple interest compound?

No. Interest is calculated on principal only unless the agreement separately adds unpaid interest to the balance.

Should I divide the annual rate by 360 or 365?

Use the day-count basis stated in the agreement. Actual/360 produces a slightly larger daily amount than Actual/365 for the same annual rate.

Can this calculate monthly simple interest?

Yes. Choose months as the time unit. The calculator treats the month count as a fraction of 12 months.
